Baby Season

This time of year we usually have an influx of calves. The good news is... that means milk production is about to go up. I know we have been short on milk for a while, and I apologize for that. We will be able to put more and more milk online each week as these new mommas start milking well. Always rest assured that we make sure the calf gets all the milk he/she needs before you or I get any. Most importantly, we have to make sure the calf gets the colostrum milk, milk produced the first 24-48 hours after calving. A baby calf has no active immune system until it's a month old. That means all of its ability to fight off any "bug" is from the immune system of its mother, through the colostrum milk that calf gets. In order to be effective the calf has to have as much colostrum as possible in the first 24 hours of life. Most of the time this process takes care of itself, but we have to watch close in case we need to intervene. It is always a pleasure to witness the miracle of life, and the babies are pretty cute to have around too.
