We are hauling our first batch of turkeys this season to the processor this morning. We are very pleased with how they look! With Thanksgiving approaching, many people have started thinking:"Who will cook the turkey this year? Where should we buy it?" The best choice is to select a pasture-raised turkey from us, as it is tastier and healthier than its mass-produced counterpart. Read on to discover the benefits of buying a turkey from us this year. Here are five important things to know about our pastured turkeys: 1. Pasture-raised turkeys are raised humanely and ethically. This is better for your health and the environment. 2. The price of pastured turkeys reflects the cost of raising them naturally and on pasture. The price of mass-produced turkeys reflects the extreme, unnatural shortcuts taken to keep the cost as low as possible. 3. Pasture-raised turkey meat is much more nutrient-dense than industrially-raised meat. This is not surprising since turkeys are sensitive to their dietary intake (as are humans!). 4. Factory-farmed turkeys are injected with water, vegetable oil, sodium phosphate, and emulsifiers. Pastured turkeys are not injected with anything. 5. Pastured turkeys cook faster and more evenly. According to The Grassfed Gourmet Cookbook, the recommended cooking time is 12-15 minutes per pound, uncovered, at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
