Spring Oats

The Plowing that we did in February, and before, has paid off. We were able to get 25 acres of spring oats planted on new ground under conventional tillage practices. Since this picture, It has had 2.5 inches of rain, so it should be shooting up out of the ground any second now. Spring oats is a good crop for us because it hits that window for any ground that we were not able to get ryegrass planted on in the fall, without having to wait for warm soil temps that are required for sorghum and millet. Unfortunately, sometimes Georgia February's can be a little grouchy and not allow any planting weather. However, this is the second February in a row that we've been able to get oat seed in the ground. Last years crop was fantastic, and I have high hopes for this one. It's not all sunshine and rainbows though, I have another 30 acres of bottomland tilled that I was hoping to get spring oats on. This recent rainfall may derail those plans. Oh well. We always have to maintain flexibility depending on what the season allows.
