Talking Turkey

The permanent Turkey Pasture that I wrote about a couple of weeks ago is now home to the turkeys that will eventually dorn our Thanksgiving tables. They have several acres to roam, and more important right now, several shade trees to protect them from the heat. The picture to the right is one of our mobile turkey shelters. This shelter allows the turkeys to get up off the ground to roost, since that is their natural instinct. Being off the ground adds an extra layer of protection from predators. Our next project is to build two additional mobile roosting trailers. Since this is a shop project, this week's rain should allow ample opportunity to get these built. The new Turkey pasture is around 6 acres. If feed, water, and shelter stayed in the same location for the entirety of the grow-out the turkeys would denude that area of any vegetation. by having everything mobile, we can move all of their necessities around the pasture. This process not only keeps the grass in good shape, but also spreads the fertility around to all areas of the pasture.
