Summer Chores

We are full bore into the steady march of summer chores. In the spring it's delightful to see the farm turn green with new plant growth, and exciting to see the baby chicks and turkeys arrive for the first time. We enjoy that sustained joy of the farm being reawakened from winter for a couple of months. This year was even more pleasant, as it was a mild and relatively wet spring. But then... After the newness of spring has come and gone, a good hot southern summer sets in. It happens every year, but it's still hard to mentally prepare for. All the things that were new and exciting in the spring, seem a little more mundane now. Putting the chickens out to pasture for the first time is totally different from moving their pasture-pens up one length, for the one-hundredth time. It's hot outside, it's hard work, and there's just no way around it. If we bounce into spring, we slog through the summer. In an odd way, that's what makes this profession so rewarding. Each day brings different challenges, as does each season, but we leave the house each day with a purpose. That purpose is to take care of all these living creatures to the very best of our ability, no matter the season. By taking the best care of them, we are also very purposefully taking care of you.
