Late Season Forage

Our late planting of Sorghum-Sudan grass is currently being harvested. The chaos of this particular summer caused us to be a little late planting, and a relative lack of rain during September created challenges. However, I am pretty happy with the results. We ended up with a clean and consistent crop, albeit with less volume than we would have had, given a little more rain. Harvesting a crop like this always makes my heart happy. Partly because of the time, effort, and resources that went into it, and partly because it represents that our cattle will be well fed for months to come. There is a satisfaction that comes over me when harvesting a crop like this. There is also the understanding that this is a cleaning of the slate. We will have a blank canvas when the last bale is moved from the field. By the end of this week, we will be preparing for the spring harvest. We will Plant ryegrass in this field, we will test the soil fertility, and we will prep the equipment to be stored for the winter. It's easy to just move on to the next task. However, enjoying the satisfaction that comes with a quality harvest is important. Taking time to enjoy is what allows us to love what we do. No matter what field you work in, when you experience a quality harvest, take the time to enjoy it.
