Calving Season

The last of the 2021 meat chickens went to the processor early this morning. The last of the Turkeys left a few weeks ago. The farm is a little quieter, and we can just start to feel things begin to slow down a bit. But the pastures are not completely quiet. We have a nice herd of beef cattle, Angus, and Jersey bloodlines, that we bred back in February. They are bred to a beautiful South Poll bull. The South Poll breed has been developed in Alabama and is known for being good mothers, and for producing excellent meat on a grass-only diet. Seemingly perfect for what we are trying to do here with our beef program. About half of the cows have calved, and so far I am very pleased with the pretty red calves that are on the ground. Some are even a chocolate color that looks fantastic. Ultimately though, the color only looks good standing in the pasture. How they perform will be determined over the next couple of years.
Getting to catch a nice photo of a long-beard wild turkey is just a perk of the job.
