Just when we start to think we have a handle on this forage production, we get a curve ball. Sugarcane Aphids. 🤷🏼♂️ Who knew? This crop is planted near the dairy and still had a couple of weeks until the planned harvest. It is sudangrass, and it looks beautiful. Unfortunately, as we were scouting it this weekend we noticed these aphids. They are pretty much covering the crop. Eventually, they would destroy the entire crop if left unchecked. There isn't much damage as of now, due to us catching it early. Our only option now is harvest it early (yield will be much lower than it would have been in 2 weeks) to preserve the current forage and hope we still have enough time for regrowth and a second cutting.
