The Impeccable Timing of a Cow

It's Memorial Day. We should all take some time to pay our respect to those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom that we enjoy. I was fully aware that today is a holiday. However, if I hadn't been, the cows wanted to remind me. One of the first things I heard this morning was "There's a cow out." I have to admit, she's still out. After I traipsed around in the tall wet grass for 30 minutes by myself, she began to look better OUT of the pasture. 😉 I decided to let her calm down a bit while I recruited some help. We'll get her up in a few minutes. I did tell her, as I was trying to coax her into the gate, "Please go in, I really need to write an email". It made me think about getting cows back inside fences on holidays. It seems to be a trend. It's like they have a sixth sense for the days we want to take it just a little bit easy. My dad always told me they are much more likely to get out on holidays or Sundays, which still holds true. A couple of years ago we had a cow out on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. I'll get some help, and we'll get this little heifer back into the pasture. The grass is tall and still covered with dew, so I'll have even wetter pants legs, and soaking wet shoes. There's a good chance we'll be tired, frustrated, and hot. In that moment, and countless moments like it, I will still be thankful for the freedom to work daily in a field that I love. Unlike many around the world, we have the freedom to work, love, travel, worship, and thrive as we are able. Let us remember that those freedoms were bought and paid for by many across history. Remember that, even when the cows are out.
