I know I talk about it a lot, but it's an exciting time of year around here. Chicks will arrive Tuesday (most likely). Sometimes they show up on Wednesday. The chickens we raise for meat production are not the white chickens raised in a commercial chicken house. We raise a type of chicken called Freedom Ranger. They have been developed from the french pastured poultry chickens known in France as Label Rouge. These birds are slower growing and more energetic than commercially grown poultry. Their energetic nature allows them to range over pasture effectively. They will spend time pecking through clumps of grass and scratching up the ground in search of worms and other insects. This means these birds need more time to reach maturity, and more space to exhibit their natural behavior. Yes, that all costs more money, time, and effort to provide. Naturally, this chicken will cost more than what is found in the grocery store, but if the characteristics mentioned above are important to you, then this is the chicken for you. Not to mention, the extra exercise and rich varied diet give these birds a taste and texture that is unmatched. We will excitedly get started raising them this week. The only bad news is that it'll be 12 weeks or so before they will be available on the website. Until then..... I guess.... enjoy some of our grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, We do have some turkey still available, or some wild-caught Alaskan seafood.
